Lactation Room Now Open

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

PLATTSBURGH, NY- (January 31, 2012) Clinton Community College is pleased to announce the College now has a new Lactation Room available for nursing mothers.

Clinton Community College Nurse, Nicole Powers said, "It's important mothers have a safe, private, comfortable space to use."

When discussions were underway regarding the new Coolidge Student Support Services Center, College officials thought it was important for breastfeeding mothers to have a dedicated place to pump breast milk. Previously, nursing moms were using a room that was primarily used for patient treatment, which was not ideal.

"Breastfeeding provides babies with vital nutrition and also boosts their immune system." Powers said. "Moms and babies alike benefit from the special bonding experience breastfeeding provides. So we are happy we now have a place for mothers to pump if they choose to breastfeed."

The new lactation room has a hospital-grade pump, which was funded by a grant from the Greater Adirondack Perinatal Network’s, “Supporting Lactation in the Workplace Mini-Grant Program.” The grant was written by Nurse Powers.

A gracious donation from Clinton Community College’s Alumni Association was used by Nurse Powers to purchase a comfortable chair and ottoman.  Student Leadership Advisor, Mary Lou Rabideau-Bruno donated framed art work, which makes the room cozy and inviting. The private room is also equipped with a sink and small refrigerator that mothers can store their milk in until they leave at the end of the day.

The Lactation Room is located at the south end of the Coolidge Student Services Support Center in room 142M, next to the Health Office.
