Clinton Community College
Clinton Community College Foundation introduces
two new Summer Science Programs for 2009
July 20-24
Biotechnology Basics
July 27-31
Robots and Science Connect
These fun, yet challenging educational programs, will provide participants with a week long experience in various disciplines in the sciences. Guided by experienced instructors, students will use sophisticated laboratory equipment, technology, and computer software packages to perform experiments that are at or above grade level and filled with fun, exciting new discoveries.
Biotechnology Basics
In this program participants will learn the essentials of biotechnology including the function of enzymes, DNA, gel electrophoresis, and the practical application of recombinant DNA technology. Participants will learn techniques commonly used by practicing scientists and explore how
biotechnology is used in industrial processes and the pharmaceutical industry. Each day of experimentation builds on the next in preparation for students to transform bacterial cells by genetically altering DNA to include the gene from a jellyfish for the green fluorescent protein. Participants will also test common foods for genetic modification using the techniques described above.
Acceptance is limited to 20 participants. Biotechnology Basics is for entering 9th and 10th grade students. The program fee is $65.00 per participant and includes the cost of required safety eyewear. The program runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Friday is parent participation day from 2 to 3 p.m. when participants share their projects. Participants must provide their own lunch and snacks.
Robots and Science Connect
This program brings together the world of computer programming and science. Participants will assemble a robot and use the Lego Mindstorms software to program the robot to perform various tasks using sensors. Through experimentation, participants will learn the science behind motion, sound, IR, and light using Vernier technology. Each science concept explored aligns with the type of sensor participants will use to program their robots to perform a task. Each day builds on the next so that participants can link the science with the action of the robot.
Acceptance is limited to 20 participants. Robots and Science Connect is for entering 7th and 8th grade students. The program fee is $60.00 per participant and runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Friday is parent participation day when participants share their projects with parents from 2 to 3 p.m. Participants must provide their own lunch and snacks.
**Programming is made possible, in part, by the Moore Innovative Fund**
Registration
A registration and release form must be filled out for each participating child. All registrations will be accepted on a first-come first-serve basis. No participant will be registered unless accompanied by the program-specific registration fee. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance into the program of choice. In cases where the applicant cancels, registration refunds will be given in full four weeks prior to program date and at a rate of 50% of the program fee two-weeks prior to program date. No refunds will be given if cancellation occurs within two-weeks of program date.
