Metropolitan Opera Field Trip

METROPOLITAN OPERA SIMULCASTS IN HD.

The Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center in New York City transmits nine of their most popular operas each season to participating theatres around the world.  These transmission are simulcasts, happening on the screen at the same time they are being performed in New York.

The Roxy Theatre in Potsdam, NY, is a participating theatre.

Clinton Community College will provide transportation to two of the remaining simulcasts during the Spring 2010 semester. There will be 10 seats available in the van for each date.  Students in MUS101 will have the first opportunity to take part in this event.

Tickets for the opera are $12 for students.  There is no cost to the student for transportation.
This is NOT a required field trip for MUS101, however, students who attend may use the experience as the basis for their concert report.
Interested students should notify their instructor at class or by email: Saundra K. Stortz

DATES AND INFORMATION FOR OPERA TRIPS

Sunday, February 28, “Carmen,” by Georges Bizet is on the schedule in a new production.
One of the most popular operas of all time, Carmen “is about sex, violence, and racism—and its corollary: freedom,” says Olivier Award-winning director Richard Eyre about his new production of Bizet’s drama. “It is one of the inalienably great works of art. It’s sexy, in every sense. And I think it should be shocking.” Elina Garanca plays the seductive gypsy of the title, opposite Roberto Alagna as the obsessed Don José.

Saturday, May 1, is “Armida” by Rossini, with Renee Fleming singing the main role. This is a new production of this opera for the Met, and new productions are always exciting.
This story of a sorceress who enthralls men in her island prison has inspired operatic settings by a multitude of composers. Renée Fleming stars in Rossini’s version of this fanciful and magical tale, opposite no fewer than six tenors.
