2006 PLAN for Internal and External Diversity Events/Activities

Part 1—Internal to CCC

Involving the campus community in celebrating diversity in a variety of ways unique to the personalities and cultures of the various constituents that comprise CCC is our intent.  We propose that:

  1. The core of internal efforts focus around a yearlong schedule wherein each month becomes the opportunity for one campus constituent to host a minimum of two (2) celebrations of diversity.  Academic Divisions, Student Services, student clubs and Administrative departments will be invited by the Diversity Team to select a month of the academic year.  While not contractually obligated to host these events, it is the Diversity Team‘s hope that some campus constituent covers each month.
  2. In addition to this core schedule, other events may be planned by any person or group on campus and will be coordinated by (or with the help of) the Diversity Team.
  3. Ongoing diversity-related activities (e-mail notices, web site, newsletters, logistics coordination, general diversity consciousness-raising) will be the responsibility of the Diversity Team.

The 2006 schedule will be filled in as campus constituents volunteer:

Month, Year

Responsible Party

February, 2006

March, 2006

April, 2006

May, 2006

September, 2006

October. 2006

November, 2006

December, 2006

CCC Internal Constituents’ volunteer to:

  1. Host a minimum of two (2) activities celebrating diversity any time during the month for which they have volunteered (one (1) activity must be open to everyone on campus (the other may be classroom-based or part of the routine activities that enhance diversity awareness/appreciation);
  2. Complete the Diversity Monthly Activity Form, which provides a brief summary of the activities (these celebrations of diversity will be included in the Diversity Newsletter) and notifies the Diversity Team of any assistance required (including monetary).  See attached form.

Diversity Team’s responsibilities are to:

1.        Schedule rooms for the open event

2.       Market and advertise the open event

3.       Arrange for technical or media support

Sample ideas for activities:  We conceive of these activities to be ones tapping the internal talent and creativity of CCC

v      CCC speaker events—tapping into resident diversity experts

v      Panel of “experts” to discuss diversity-related issues

v      Film with discussion

v      Focus Groups on diversity-related topics

v      Food-related events

v      Course-based activities

v      Performances/entertainment provided by CCC faculty and/or staff

v      Contests, games, competitions

Part 2—External to CCC

In addition to consistent efforts made by the college community to celebrate diversity, the Diversity Team will coordinate two (2) one-day events each semester.  These events will:

  1. Be open to the public as well as to CCC students and employees
  2. Involve only speakers/performers external to CCC
  3. Have a minimum of three (3) daytime events, each occurring at different times and one (1) evening event (perhaps a repeat of one of the daytime events)
  4. Be scheduled in the largest rooms available to accommodate multiple CCC classes, area school classes, CCC employees and the public.
  5. Will be coordinated with Sodexo to offer food selections reflective of diversity.

The one-day Celebration of Diversity will be held during the months of October and April.  The first one will be in April 2006 (Wednesday, April 5 is the targeted date), the second in October 2006.  Both events (the date, specific events, booking of external “talent”) will be planned annually each fall semester for the upcoming calendar year to allow ample time to advertise the events and let faculty build the day into their course schedule (should they choose to do so).
