Clinton Community College

Statement of Intent
Clinton Community College has an obligation to prepare students to function effectively in a global community. Since this global community is not homogeneous, students must be made keenly aware that they will work and live in a world of enormous diversity, and the College must provide them with opportunities to develop an understanding about, sensitivity to, and appreciation of diversity.
Furthermore, as an educational institution, the College cannot ignore the background and perspectives of its students and must attempt to promote teaching practices and a campus atmosphere that benefits and ensures the success of all of its learners. In order to address these meaningful components of the College’s mission, the Diversity Celebration has been established.
This project will be a campus-wide focus on the value diversity holds for the individual and for the community. Throughout the year, instructors are encouraged to incorporate the theme of diversity into the teaching content of their courses, rather than attempt to make the content fit the theme.
Diversity Celebration Targets
Provide opportunities to:
¨Define and recognize different types of diversity.
¨Acknowledge, celebrate, and appreciate diversity in the individual and in the community.
¨Create a sensitivity to and respect for diversity.
¨Encourage communication and discourse regarding diversity-related issues.
¨Identify common needs, values, and goals within diverse groups.
¨Identify components which lead to intolerance, and then propose strategies for creating a climate of tolerance
and acceptance of diversity.
¨Encourage in-class, and out-of-class activities which acknowledge and illuminate diversity-related issues. Make use of college resources and frameworks for the study of diversity.
