Bridging the Divide: Enhancing K-16 Education in Computer Science Using Alice
A SUNY FACT COCID
The field of Computer Science has seen a dramatic decline in the number of students majoring in this discipline since the "dot com" bubble burst in 2000. One way to make the computing field more interesting and attractive to students is to re-invent the way we teach, especially at the introductory level. To this end, SUNY Brockport will host a one-day workshop on June 26 on the Alice system.
Available free-of-charge, Alice is a gentle introduction to computing. Alice is a visually-oriented system that allows students to build and control their own "micro-worlds". Students effectively become "movie producers" as they add characters to their world and control the actions of these characters. Alice provides immediate feedback to students, allowing them to "play" their movie at will. One of the major attractions of Alice is its appeal to non-traditional populations.
This workshop will be open to instructors at both the K-12 and the college level. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at the SUNY Brockport campus.
More information can be obtained by sending email to:

Teaching to Improve Retention
Whether you are teaching a first-year seminar or any other course that enrolls first-year students, this e-seminar will help you think about specific teaching strategies that support retention. Betsy Barefoot will draw on her experience in both retention research and teaching to provide strategies that can be used across the curriculum Within a broad framework of research-based concepts, participants will also be encouraged to share their own experiences in the first-year classroom. Our students continue to disappear at an alarming rate. Our enrollment patterns are concerning. This topic is very timely. Room 105M has been booked until 230PM to allow for informal conversation following the e-seminar. These conferences always seem to offer a little something for everyone!
Please RSVP by Friday March 30th. Call Kathy Borrie at ext. 199 to reserve your seat and help us in planning snacks for the event.
