Clinton Community College
The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematices (STEM) Outreach Program at Clinton Community College is dedicated to enhancing STEM literacy within our community. CCC has established partnerships with community businesses and grade 5-12 educators and students. These efforts provide quality programming that underscores the commitment by CCC to be a valuable contributor to educating our citizenry in and out of the classroom.
STEM Outreach at Clinton Community College:
- Provides STEM education programming for students, teachers and our community that emphasizes understanding the nature of science, mathematics, and the use of technology through hands-on active investigations.
- Provides program based learning opportunities for the grade 5-12 student population that encourages careers in science, mathematics and technology (STEM) early on in their educational experience.
- Provides elementary, middle and high school students, and teachers formal and informal STEM enrichment opportunities consistent with the National Science Education Standards , and NYS Math, Science and Technology Standards.
- Develops programming that supports STEM initiatives that align with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Project 2061 in the pursuit of a scientifically literate society. Two documents Benchmarks for Science Literacy and Science for All Americans provide the framework for building and providing quality STEM outreach programs.
- Supports the mission of Clinton Community College through program initiatives that underscore the importance of science, mathematics, and technology that enrich our community with engaging learning opportunities.
- Highlights the Clinton Community College campus, its students, faculty and their interconnectedness to the community.
RECENT UPDATES AND NEWS
Science Club recently sponsored a Girl Scout team in the Junior First Lego League competition. The competition was held at the University at Albany Saturday December 3, 2011.
The challenge this year was Snack Attack. The team investigated the process of how yogurt was made, packaged, and distributed to market. They developed a sorting table model using Legos that detected unsafe temperatures during storage and high fructose corn syrup. If either of these conditions were present, the sorting table flipped the yogurt into a bin preventing distribution and thus contributing to more safe and healthy foods at the store.
The "Yogurt Parfait Cafe" was a success at the competion and the team received the Most Explosive Award for their vivid description of their model and colorful poster presentation.
