Legal Rights

The rights of college students with disabilities are protected by these four laws:

• Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 - This law mandates " reasonable"
  accommodations for "otherwise qualified" individuals who are "substantially limited"
  in one or more major life functions (i.e., learning).
• The Americans with Disabilities Act - extends the protection of Section 504 to the private sector to include employment, transportation and telecommunication.
• The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (F.E.R.P.A.) - gives students some control over the release of personally identifiable information from their educational records.
• National Voter Registration Act
  
  The college's grievance procedures can be found in the handbook for students with disabilities (available from the Learning Resource Specialist, Rm. 211M) and in the college catalog. If you are not satisfied with the outcome of the school's grievance procedures, you may file a complaint with the Office of Civil Rights.
