Clinton Community College Men’s Basketball Team Secures Victory Against #6 Mohawk Valley

In a thrilling matchup that kept fans on the edge of their seats, Clinton Community College's Men's basketball team emerged victorious against the formidable #6 ranked Mohawk Valley Community College on November 7, 2023.

Entering the game on a 2-game win streak with a pristine record of 2-0, Clinton faced a Mohawk Valley team with a remarkable 27-5 record from the previous season, ranking as high as #2 in the country. The last season saw Mohawk Valley dominate both regular-season games against Clinton and represent Region 3 in the National Tournament.

The game was a defensive battle throughout the first half as both teams sought to find their rhythm. Clinton took a narrow lead of 27-24 at halftime, thanks to a clutch rebound and layup by Kymani Harley as time expired.

Maintaining their lead throughout the second half, Clinton extended their advantage to fourteen points with crucial three-pointers and layups by R.J Turner with 7 minutes left in the game. However, Mohawk Valley fought back with a pressing defense, causing turnovers and narrowing the gap to eight points with 4 minutes remaining.

A timely three-pointer by Tyruse Boock cut the Cougars' lead to five, and Mohawk Valley managed to tie the game at 63 with just 16 seconds on the clock. In a heart-stopping final play, Elijah Carroll dribbled the length of the court and scored the game-winning layup with 1.5 seconds left, securing a 65-63 victory for the Cougars.

R.J Turner led the charge for the Cougars with an impressive 17 points, while Elijah Carroll contributed 16 points and 6 rebounds. Dylan Hunter's double-double performance with 12 points and 10 rebounds, along with Dai'marquis Brooks' crucial role in securing 14 rebounds, played a pivotal role in Clinton's historic win.

This triumph marks the first time Clinton Community College has defeated Mohawk Valley in Utica since 2014. With a perfect 3-0 record, the Cougars boast their best start to a season in over 10 years.
